An email from a friend I am posting here (some edits so it makes sense to others) :
As you know I am a medical marijuana grower. And operate in “full compliance” with our state and local laws- whatever that means. As the laws tend to be poorly defined, and constantly revised.
But despite 16 states and the distric of columbia having medical marijuana laws, and some 18 states with proposed laws (and at least 3 states seriously trying to legalizerecreational marijuana, and many other states and cities essentially decriminalizing it) we still live in limbo.
Despite the evidence of its safety and effectiveness, despite the evidence it does not belong in Schedule I, if it belongsas a scheduled drug as all, it is still a serious federal crime.
Last year, after numerous months of 70++ hr work weeks to provide cannabis for our members, all the while making less money on the year then I could at my old job…
And every day- we must live in fear. Is this the day the state or the feds will come? Regardless of whether we will be arrested, or even less likely, convicted, will they rip out all our plants- essentially bankrupting us- with no real legal recourse?
It is hard to explain the feeling of powerlessness, the fear one feels when the choppers come, hovering, flying and back forth. Although you fully believe in what you are doing, and are fully compliant with state laws- they can take it all- leaving you no recourse…
So why do I do it? Maybe it’s seeing the cancer patients who chemo was killing just as surely as the cancer- who could suddenly eat. Maybe it’s the pain patients- who managed to avoid or kick adddiction to prescription opiates. Maybe it’s the alcoholics who found a way to kick alcohol, to stop driving drunk on a regular basis. Or those that finally found a solution to their depression or anxiety.
I don’t know. It’s amazing to me that it is the conservatives, the republicans, who are our biggest foes- yet they champion “States rights” in every case but this. It is amazing to me that the federal government ignores the science- on both the benefits, and harms (or lack thereof) of cannabis- especially ignoring the empirical evidence supposedly required by our laws for the scheduling of substances.
That they continue to maintain a monopoly on the supply of cannabis for research. And that when they do deem it appropriate it to supply cannabis- it is a relatively low THC cannabis comprised of leaf, stems, seeds, and flower parts- rather then the flowers realistically used ofr medical (or recreational) purposes.
That it is now easier to get federal approval to do research with MDMA (ecstasy) or psilocypin (mushrooms) then it is with cannabis.
That the evidence- such as the Independent Scientific Comittee on Drugs in the UK, and published in the prestigious, peer reviewed medicl journal “The Lancet” found even recreational use to far less harmful to the individual and society the tobacco or alcohol.
Or the recent studies showing states that legalized medical marijuana saw a significant drop in DUI fatalities as well as in suicides. And saw no increase in teen cannabis use.Not to mention the documented decreases in crime, and reduced costs to the state prosecuting marijuana “crimes”
I realize it is hard to admit when you have been wrong- especially when it is deeply embedded. But the science is there. The morals are there. And the people are there.
