British conservative Prime Minister David Cameron is leading the charge for gay marriage in the UK.
“I don’t support gay marriage despite being a Conservative,” Cameron said in a recent landmark speech on the issue. “I support gay marriage because I am a Conservative.”
In 2004 gays in Britain won the right to civil unions. And ulike the US, there has been little demand in the gay community for marriage rights.
And while the religious conservatives- long a core support of the British conservatives, are opposed- Cameron and the conservative leadership are forging ahead- calling this an issue of human rights.
Seems the conservatives…and the liberals in the US could learn a lesson or two here…
