While things are still very much a guessing game at this point, one, very real possibility is rearing its head.
Obama may very well win the popular vote, by 7 million+/- votes. But loose the electoral college. Many of the most populous states- the west coast, massachussetts, new york, and many others are likely Obama wins. But the vast majority of the country, by land mass- not by people, will go Romney. (Yes- the classic red state/blue state map).
So- will we see a repeat of 2000- where a democrat who won concedes? Can such a deeply divided aerica survive this- with both sides crying “foul”.
Many, on both sides (often on the further edges of both parties) have long been calling for the abolition of the electoral college. Will the loosing side remember this? Will the will of the people, a representative democracy, a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” win out? Or will an antiquated system be upheld because it supports the will of a few?
