How much is enough?

So I was reading yesterday about casino magnate Sheldon Adelson’s $10 million gift to a Romeny super pac, and saw his net worth was a whopping $25 Billion. Thats 25 thousand million. (remember when millionaires were the rich? It wasn’t that long ago…)

Anyway it brought to mind the 25yr old line from the movie Wall Street. something along the lines of “how many boats can you ski behind?”

Really- I can’t think of anyone who deserves that kind of wealth, and I can think of relatively few people who have done anything to deserve being billionaires. And those I can think of that deserve wealth…well of course…they don’t have it.

And of course Adelsons an interesting case. A life long democratic until he started getting wealthy, and who has said a leading cause of his switch to the republican side was unionized hotel employees in Vegas. Cutting into HIS profit, daring to expect the american dream for their lowly selves.

It’s easy for the rich to say that it is they who create jobs- so people should be thankful. It’s harder for them to accept that without those workers, and ultimately all the workers who are the customers- they would be nowhere. Ever been in New York City, during the summer, during a garbage strike? I have- kind of puts things in a new perspective.

This was not the american dream. We are not even talking the much discussed 1%. No- we are talking the new kings, the new overlords- the .1%. Those with so much wealth, and by default, power. And not only the power to corrupt politics (like it needs any help), but the power to effect markets, the power to effect each and everyone of our lives. (and rarely- if ever, for the better).

I highly doubt our founding fathers ever foresaw this day. Nor would they tolerate it. They were firm believers in every man (well, every white man) having an honest oppurtunity to better themselves, free from influences (of government, business, etc) that they had no control over.

So the question remains: “How much is enough”? “How many boats can you ski behind”? And when will you stop screaming socialist/marxist/communist at every person who cares more about you then those that create the problems you live under?

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

Reblogged this on The Last Of The Millenniums and commented:
As Elizabeth Warren pointed out, no one person is responsible for their wealth. The Government (people) built the roads, taught in schools, supplied clean water, police departments, fire departments, built a military to protect their industries.
With wealth comes (or should) responsibility. The responsibility of ‘paying it forward’.
Giving back to the community that gave you the opportunity to be wealthy.
    THAT builds a strong Nation.
When individuals only extract wealth like Adelson, it slowly destroys our Nation.
