The right is making much noise that Obama lied in his book, “Dreams of My Father” after a reporter (David Maraniss) from (that untrustworthy liberal bastion the Washington Post) published his book (Barack Obama: The Story) has published accounts of Obama’s family history that in some cases differ from the story Obama told.
But ironically this has come out just as I am wrapping up spending time with my family. And daily, sometimes multiple times a day, I have been made aware of our much our family history, or I suppose our understanding of it, varies. There are many aspects of my families history- from great grandparents down to my siblings lives that the version I had in my head was different from the truth, or at least different from that remembered by the bulk of my family.
Which really shouldn’t surprise me. I have many events that I have shared with my wife, my family, or my friends far more recently that we seem to have different recollections of the exact details of.
It seems to be human nature to believe our memory is correct- when quite often it is not. How many times in the past week have you been unable to find your keys, positive that you left them on the table? Or sure that you had done something that you hadn’t?
But of course, Obama intentionally lied.
And if we held our spouse, our families, ourselves to the same level of certainity…our lives would be much less pleseant.
