First off- I am NOT anti-gun. I AM opposed to the very recent supreme court decision re: the second amendment. And of the propensity to, as the supreme court oddly did, ignore the “well regulated militia” part of the 2nd amendment. It is clear our founding fathers feared a standing federal army- something we foolishly gave in on long ago.
But I digress. This post is about the US industry of arms sales. With 2011 setting a new record- $66.3 Billion in overseas arms sales (almost 80% of the word arms market). Amazingly- the previous record for arms sales was just $31 billion. See the Congressional Research Service study here .
And maybe more alarming is the growth in international civilian small arms sales. Google has done some very interesting work to visualize the global trade in small arms, in which the US again leads.
If you don’t have google chrome y0u will need a browser with WebGL enabled (on a Mac using Safari the setting is under the “develop” tab which you must have enabled). See here . Or their blog on the project here .
Regardless, besides the fact that the US leads all devolped nations in both violent deaths and firearm related deaths, it is quite disturbing to see the extent of the US arms industry- and their peddling of these weapons to both foreign governments and civilians.
