Mei Xiang Gives Birth!

In the immortal words of Monty Python… “And now for something completely different”

Mei Xiang, the female panda at the national zoo in DC gave birth this week. News that made my day, week, and probably month.

While I don’t have a lot of memories of my childhood, some of the most vivid I do have are of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, the first giant pandasgiven to the US by China after Nixon’s historic trip there in 1972. Many trips to the national zoo, and something about these creatures sparked not only a love of Pandas, and not only an appreciation for the fragile world we, and they inhabit, but of politics, and more importantly, of the things even “enemies” can accomplish when they realize they have more in common then they do in differences.

So take a few minutes, read the article on the birth over at the washingtom post, or go to youtube or google images and relax over pictures or video of these creatures.

And maybe, just maybe…forget your frustrations, anxieties, anger…for a few minutes. And marvel at these endangered creatures. And maybe think for a minute what it took for those evil red communist chinese, and that evil ******** Nixon, to bring those first pandas to our country. And maybe realize that while people- both in other countries and even within our own may have different beliefs, hopes, religions… that really we share one very tiny planet- and have far more in common then we are usually willing to admit.

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.
