Rather a letdown. And not surprising, really…
Of course the pundits are going wild, despite the slim pickings…
And yes, as I listened to it, my gut feeling was Romey “won”…but more on that in a minute
Why, you ask? Because Obama is an introvert. He doesen’t have the charisma of Bill Clinton, or the lunky, frat boy likeableness of Bush. Or the aw schucks b-grade (ok, I’m being generous) charisma of Reagan. It amazes me to this day someone like Obama would ever put himself in such a position. Which ultimately, I must say, makes me believe even more in his intentions…as much as I often disagree with him.
But back on track. I’m sure, to many, Romney “won”. But not on ideas, but on presentation. And I suppose, hungriness for the role.
Never mind what those really watching saw. Romeny moving to the center as a defense on many issues. Because let’s face it- for all his pandering to the far right, to the Tea Party, he has always been, very much, a centrist. Which maybe explains why for months during the primaries Romney was the front runner, and the GOP kept looking for “anyone BUT Romney”
And yet at the same time Romney pandered to the far rightn at times, trying to play to to all audiencies rather then being real. And continued to make his claims of having plans, while refusing to reveal details. Plans, that on the thin basis he has laid out, have been deemed, shall we say, impossible. ( like reigning in the deby while increasing military spending by $150 billion a year with not only no new taxes, but further tax cuts…)
And from the fact checking I have seen so far, despite hisown issues, Obama was the clear victor.
Obama, per usual, failed pretty miserably. Not on ideas. But on presentation…
And actually, as I write this, it bothers me more and more that Romney “won”. It feels like high school politics. Makes me think of the old line, often attributed (incorrectly I believe) to Groucho Marx: “The secret to sucess is sincerity. Once you can fake that you’ve got it made”. And there you go. a victory for Romney, albeit it of the most shallow type.
Proving, if nothing else, he has no business being president. But proving the (at least attributed to) DeToqueville line: “People getthe government they deserve”
And BTW, whose brilliant idea was it to hod the debate not only on the closing day of the regular baseball season, but on Obamas wedding anniversary?
And by one count, Romney was heard uttering the word “Fnord” 112 times, to obamas 27.
