So after coyly perpetuating one of the right wing conspiracy theories, the fabeled (and non-existent) “Death Panels” when discussing Obamacare, Mitt revealed his own death panel plan- and Big Bird Must Die!
Long a favorite target of the right, The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, because after all, it is the last remaining real news service in America and is not for sale to the highest bidder.
So just what are we talking about here. For FY 2013 Congress has appropriated a whopping $445 Million to the CFPB. Of which roughly $300 million is for PBS (the remainder to public radio). Ironically, the total budget for both entities is barely twice Romney’s personal net worth.
And I guess this how Romney intends to solve the deficit- save 445 million while spending 150 BILLION extra dollars on the military.
And let’s face it. Killing the tiny portion of their budget that comes from taxpayers won’t kill PBS or NPR. What it will do however is force them to close many of their most expensive outlets. Which are those serving rural americans (which was, after all, the entire reasoning behind the creation of Public Broadcasting in the 60’s). The very people who are least likely to be served by cable. The very people who have few, and often zero “over the air” options, and often people who really can not afford the expense of satellite TV service…these are the americans Romney wants to cut off.
Ironically, these people also tend to be the republican base. And the goal seems to be to cut them off from reliable news, culture and arts. Leaving them with…what? I suppose the rise of right wing talk radio on AM will be the main “source” of “information” for the GOP base.
And survey after survey shows that the majority of americans do not want federal funding abolished. And, that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is consistently ranked as the most trustworthy government instiution. And of course despite claims of rampant left wing bias, study, after study, after study has found NPR and PBS to be not only the most balanced news outlet in America, but also the most thourough and comprehensive.
Well, if nothing else, Romney has solved my dilemma on what to wear for haloween. Might just have to wear it to the polls a week later.
