The Republican Lie That’s “Factually” True

One that has bugged me for some time, and I heard it from Paul Ryan’s mouth during the VP Debate tonight.

“When Obama took office they had complete control of all houses of the government”.

Which is factually correct.

But it ignores the reality. Democrats had a majority in name only in the Senate. They did not have a large enough majority to override a veto. (and let’s not even get into the “Blue Dog Democrats, and other, mostly southern and midwestern democrats who vote with republicans on many issues).

And let’s be honest. 2009 was, at the time, labeled “The Year of the Fillibuster”. (of course it’s since been surpassed since then).

And it’s not just a matter of blocking a vote on issues you know you will loose. It’s blocking discussion. Blocking any potential for making your case. For creating the give and take that is what our so called representatives our supposed to do.

And let’s not forget. The american people gave the democrats control. Largely thanks to 8 years of republican missteps. and the republicans response- throw a temper tantrum. If we can’t have our way- we’ll stop you. And hell no we don’t do what the peoples mandate told us- work together.

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

One Response to The Republican Lie That’s “Factually” True

  1. List of X says:

I think someone calculated that Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate for about 7 weeks: from the time Al Franken was seated in the Senate after all the MN recounts were done, and until Ted kennedy had died. The rest of the time, Republicans really controlled the Senate.
