Time to End the Welfare State – Starting with Texas

Texas, under the hand of (former GOP presidential hopeful) Rick Perry, leads the nation- giving out some $19 Billion a year- in corporate welfare. And while Perry loves to make the claim that Texas has seen the creation of half of the private sector jobs in the country over the last decade.

But as great as that sounds- the details are uglier. Texas ranks 11th in poverty (yes, behind a slew of other red states). they are 3rd (again behind other red states) in jobs at or below minimum wage. They had to cut $5.4 billion from education funding last year, putting them in the bottom 5th in the nation for education spending per student. (at the same time the GOP party platform in Texas was demanding they stop teach critical thinking)

Anyway, a fascinating 3 part series over at the NY Times on the over $80 Billion in “incentives” state and local governments give out every year- a whopping $9.1 Million each and every hour.

Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 , an interactive series of charts on the date per state here , and an interview with the author on NPR here

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

  1. List of X says:

Or, to put it differently, about $40 milllion each hour these state or local governments are open for busines.

  2. Barneysday says:

When the focus on our limited minded Repubs is “jobs” they take great pride in creating huge numbers of jobs with no benefits, and no future, barely at minimum wage. It is only by looking behind the numbers that the reality comes out. We need good jobs, not just some fictitious number to make a politician look good.
    Great post
