The conspiracy theorists of the far right are at it again- now with “proof” that their longstanding claims that Obama intends to seek a 3rd (and more) term, or even to become “president for life. Specifically, HJ Res 15 introduced by NY Democrat representative Jose Serrano.
A resolution which does indeed seek to add a constiutional amendment to repeal the 22nd Amendment. And yes, the 22nd amendment does indeed limit the president to two terms.
But of course there’s a problem with this whole conspiracy theory. Partially based on the ruthlesness of those willing to lie and deceive to accomplish their goals, and part based on the ignorance of the followers, and partially what I call the Fox Muldur syndrome… “I want to believe” – the willingness to accept what you want to hear rather then seek the truth, to inspect the facts, all of them- not just the ones presented to you by someone with an agenda, and to think critically.
So, back on topic. HJ Res 15 is the exact same bill that the same congressman, Jose Serrano has introduced a total of 9 times, every two years on average, since 1997 during the Clinton Administration. He introduced the same bill tice under Clinton. 4 times under Bush, and now 3 times under Obama.
Likewise at least seven other congressman, from both parties have introduced similar bills at least 14 times since the Clinton administration, more often then not while an opposing party held the presidency.
Clearly this has nothing whatsoever to do with Obama and his simpy yet another futile attempt of a pet project from Serrano.
And of course, none of these bills, including the most recent, would establish a “president for life”. Nothing would be changed requiring an election every four years.
And of course, despite the dozens of similar proposals since adoption of the 22nd amendment, none of these have even made it to a vote in congress-much less being passed to the states (requiring 3/4s to ratify it) for ratification (as required for a constiutional amendment). In other words, absolutely zero chance of ever being passed.
And a sad irony in the discussion from many on the far right, the self proclaimed defenders of the constiution and sages who understand every motive of the hallowed founding fathers… Well, many seem to be claiming it was the founding fathers and their constitution that set the two term limit…the 22nd amendment was not passed until after FDR had won 4 terms. (it was passed in 1947- nearly a century and a half after the founding fathers)
I am not sure which is worse- the ignorance of such a loud portion of the american population, or the high powered hacks in the right wind “news”, media, and “movements” who are so willing to lie and deceive to advance the agenda of their moneied masters.
