Ah yes, Pepsi Co has announced they will be doing it’s consurers a favor- removing Brominated Vegetable Oil from their product Gatorade. A substance used as a flame retardant. Which has been banned in consumables use in the European Union and Japan. Apparently though they plan to leave it in Mountain Dew (and possibly other products?). In gatorade- it is used as an emulsifier, essentially to spread the flavors more evenly.
But don’t jump for joy yet- in Gatorade BVO is being replaced with sucrose acetate isobutyrate, which in some studeis has been linked to increase in liver size
At this same time we see California leading the way adding BPA to the list of dangerous substances. As a reproductive health hazard. BPA (Bisphenol A) is present in, among other things, the plastic containers the drinks above are often sold in. Of course, the levels one is exposed to are below the levels that will require a warning label in CA. But of course thats based on per exposure and doesn’t account for the cumulative effects of often multiple exposures a day (and from other sources from thermal paper receipts to the lining of tin cans to the multiple beverages many ingest daily from plastic bottles. Nor of course the added exposure risk when plastic bottles are left in the sun or in a car).
Ah yes- the joys of capitalism. Produce products as cheaply as possible. Let the individual, and the governments pay the true costs associated with these products. All the while whining about the evil over regulation that doesn’t exist and allows you to get awaywith this. While whining about the ufairness of taxes. While whining about those damn employees who want a living wage…
