Because yes- besides the christian holiday of Easter falling on March 31st this year, it is also the birthday of Cesar Chavez. (and thanks to Obama the 3rd? “Cesar Chavez Day”
And the right-wing nuts have been livid. (some- like good ole’ Twitchy (Michelle Malkins account) first thought it was the OTHER Chavez. Yes- the dead Venezuelaean leader. Of course their outrage didn’t change, just shifted slightly when they figured out it was the other evil socialst Chavez. You know- the one who dared agitate for evil socialist things such as safer working/living conditions for the people who do the hard work of putting food on americas table, for better pay. For the end of abuses of often migrant labor- abuses that often included hiring crews for the harvest and then calling in immigration once the harvest was done but before they were paid. OR simply refusing to pay- knowing they had little to no recourse. (after all- our nation did largely the same thing during WWII when we brought in thousands of mexican farmworkers to keep america going and reneged on most of our promises, and payments to them when the war was over).
And I have to laugh of some of the right wing nuts taking to Twitter and elsewhare saying they are switching to Microsofts “Bing”. Microsoft- who came out heavily in favor of gay marriage. Whose multi-billionaire founder heavily supports vastly increased taxation of the rich and is friends with the evil George Soros and has taken the pledge to give away much of his wealth.
All because google chose to homor Chavez on his birthday. Chavez- who has major streets named after him in every state with a substantial latino population. Chavez- whose birthday has celebrations exceeding halloween or st patricks day in numerous states. Chavez- who along with unions was for most of the 20th century a symbol to much of america- to the working class who had suffered horrible abuses in the first half of the century.
And of course- then there is the whole concept of easter to deal with. Part of a mythology. One that co-opted the pagan and other traditions preceding it- placing easter roughly at the time of the traditional holidays of the vernal equinox.Rebirth. Spring. 12/12 sunlight and the days getting longer again. The idea remains the same- only the charachters and details morph…
