No- not of the bombing themselves- horrible as they were. But of my country, Americas, response.
It was painful to watch, as tragedy- which has so often in the past brought out the best in our country- instead bring out the worst.
I watched in disgust as major news agencies failed at the most basic of fact/source checking in their rush to be the first with a scoop. As Reddit crowdsourced an investigation resulting in the posting of names and addresses for numerous “suspects” who were innocent. Both of which led to untold havoc for a number of individuals and their families.
And of course, the right-wing(nuts) went into full tilt agenda mode. Ted Nugent proudly proclaiming that the younger brother should be strung up immediately. Numerous pundits and even congressman insisting he should be tried as an enemy combatant. The police and feds going a full 16 hrs of interviewing the individual without reading of Miranda Rights (and being shocked- shocked I tell you! And outraged! when a fedral judge dare walk into the room and Mirandarize the suspect. That they should be sent to Gitmo, tried by the military (if not just summarily executed).
I’ve got to admit- I had planned that week, before the bombings, to only get my “news” from right wing sources (just to see how stupid it made me I suppose). A plan I couldn’t end up keeping- it was making me sick as well as stupid.
But of course I learned that Iran/Saudi Arabia/North Korea where all involved. Thanks to WND and Glen Beck I learned a Saudi national was involved- presumably their controller. A man who was on lists that should have barred him from the country, but somehow he got here. And he was being quietly whisked from the country. That he had had meetings with Michelle Obama. That government files on him were mysteriously disappearing. That…well…how much time do you really want to spend on this list of what the wingnuts think?
And of course out came the politicians latching onto this to further their agendas- for blocking immigration and fortifying the borders. As a reason people need assault weapons. To crucify Islam and to suggest ALL muslims should be barred from and/or kicked out of the country. To justify racial profiling and an increased police state.
I find it interesting that those evil liberal media outlets by and large offered up a Mea Culpa. Were “man enough” to admit their mistakes. While the right wing nuts doubled down, and then some.
And I find it interesting that one of the older brothers major influences appears to have been none other then Alex Jones and his site infowars. A site favored by conspiracy theorists and wingnuts on both the far right and far left- so far from the center they basically meet on the edges of the circle.
And in my heart of hearts I know that despite their numbers, these right-wing(nuts) are still just a loud minority- and one that does not represent the bulk of the citizens of our country.
But I am increasingly worried about the harm to our country they are willfully doing. The VERY dangerous game they are playing. Stirring up hate and fear, more often then not based on lies, false assumptions, and faulty logic.
And I find it disturbing that so few americans have any idea of what had actually transpired in Chechyna. As they were ignorant of the history in Afghanistan before 9/11, and still, sadly, are (and dear old Ronnie Reagans grand role).
