With the so called “Polar Vortex” hitting huge swaths of america, the climate change deniers are insisting it is proof, or at least strong evidence so galled “global warming” is a hoax. And day after day I am seeing references in the discussions to Time magazines “Famous” 1977 cover “The coming ice age”, which I suppose is meant to prove that scientists were wrong then, and are now.
Well, just a few small problems there folks.
First off- Time never published that. Here is the actual cover shown before photoshopping, from 2007:
And HERE is Time magazines own article on the photoshopped cover.
And to be fair- there was some minor, and sensationalist coverage of the ice age theory in the 70’s. A minor theory, based on the cooling effect of particulate pollution such as from coal and other dirty fuels. (uh-oh- now the right wing-nuts will be blaming global warming on the evil environmentalists and the EPA who mandated drastic reductions in these pollutants). And as the Time article debunking the cover points out- a review of the published science during that decade shows overwhelmingly support of the global warming/climate change theory- not of clobal cooling.
I remember years ago hearing one of the big climate change scientists being interviewed, and she said she hated the term “global warming” and like many scientists preferred global climate change. Because while the earth was indeed, globally, rising in temperature, the reality of weather and local climates and micro climates would mean that humans would notice changes. Some might notice rising temps.. Other lower. More violent. more…or less…
I almost feel sorry for the deniers. Overwhelmingly it seems to be a common psychological response to news that is too hard to bear. And an unwillingness to accept that we could have brought this on ourselves.
And for some- just pure greed- the costs of dealing with it are substantial.
But make no mistake. The costs of not dealing with it will be astronomical. (Maybe why the insurance industry is among the first industries to come on board the global climate change bandwagon)
And let’s be real. We are at a point where 97% of the scientists in the fields accept/support the idea of human caused global warming. (yes, some put this number as low as a whopping 85%, largely by looking at decades of research rather then modern consensus). And sadly, a growing portion of these say it is already too late- even if we moved to act tomorrow it would be too late to mitigate many of the worst consequences.
