The sad truth of the health status of the flood of immigrant children

I’m sure we have all heard the shrill cries from the right wing nuts about the coming pandemic of disease being brought to american shores by the flood of “unaccomapanied minors” arriving from central america.

Everone from Fox to WND is running multiple apocolyptic stories a day. Featuring such “experts” as Fox contributor Dr Elizabeth Lee Viliet (whose pratice centers solely on the very profitable field of hormone replacement and who, as far as I can tell, has zero experience in communicable diseases or public health. And who they proudly proclaim is a member of the lofty sounding Association of American Physicians and Surgeons- which is nothing more then a far right conservative group founded after WWII to “stop the spread of socialized medicine”).

So let us look at some actual facts. There have been over a half million unaccompanied minors at the border in recent months. And so far it appears we have had, suspected or confirmed, one case of h1n1 (swine flu). A couple cases of TB. A few cases of measels. And asorted cases of, gasp, lice and scabies.

Now, let’s be real. All of these diseases already exist in the US. TB and h1n1 cases in particular have been surging in recent years, thanks to everything from the reality of globabl travel and the rise in the anti-vacination folks in america.

And let us look at some facts about these central americcan countries shall we? Thanks in no small part to Dr Vilets bugaboo- socialized medicine, these central american countries actually have vacination levels on par or exceeding those in the US. For example- this oft quoted article by the right on the situation actually goes on to debunk the risks with actual facts for anyone that actually bothers to read it. As does this article from the Texas Observer, or the raw data from Unicef here.

So, the evidence paints a much different story. There is no particularly great risk from these unacompanied minors. Nor “illegal immigrants” in general. The biggest risk is the far right (and far left) anti-vacination folks. And the general risk is simply the reality of the world we live in today. Millions of travellers in and out of this country to and from points all over the globe. – whether for family, pleasure, or work.

There simply is no great risk presented by these children, or immigrants in general. But the far right knows that fear is a very powerful tool- especially when combined with a combination of ignorance and a general unwillingness to deal with facts that contradict a belief.

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

I look at it from the angle that the US is responsible for the poverty and horror these people are escaping from. In a fair world and karmic world, the US should get lingering sores on its proverbial butt, never mind the flu. What’s that Arabic curse about fleas and camels again?

    • Indeed.

Between the Reagan/Bush administrations decade run of juntas, supporting brutal dictators and death squads throughout virtually all of central america… coupled with the combination of americas unquenchable thirst for drugs and the reality of the failure of the drug war which has given rise to cartels and gangs throughout the region… the current surge of children escaping the reality we overwhelmingly helped create is indeed the proverbial chickens coming home to roost…

Maybe the main fear of conservatives is that these children may be carrying some especially virulent strains of socialism…

Thanks for sharing. The modus operandi is to make people scared of something so that they don’t mind trouncing on them or it. These kids are refugees and we need to treat them with kindness and fairness. If people want to get scared, the greatest threat we face as a people is our increasing immunity to antibiotics to such an extent that the pharma industry has to up the ante each time. This is an American caused problem as we are overprescribed with antibiotics and our natural defenses are not allowed to do what they have done over our existence. Sorry for the digression. BTG

Just last week the local news (TV and Albuquerque Journal) reported that the immigration holding center in Artesia, New Mexico was on lockdown due to a runaway number of chicken pox cases amongst the illegal alien children and mothers being housed there. All the local channels are not conservative wing-nuts and neither is the Albuquerque Journal and yet they reported this story. Maybe things are not as benign as you think.

    • hmmm, yes, the deadly scourge of chickenpox.

But seriously- did I say that these peope are 100% free of any commincable diseases? No, to the contrary. I did however say what the facts are telling us- these people come from a largely vacinated population, and do not appear to be showing signs of illness at any rate markedly higher then our own population. And that the opinion of the experts on communicable diseases agree they pose no threat to our countries health that is any greater then our own citzens do.
And yes- this is probably the second detention facility I am aware of that has had such an “outbreak”. That is what tends to happen when you warehouse people in confined spaces.
This is still a far cry from coming apocalyptic pandemic of deadly diseases that every right leaning “news” source is screaming about multiple times throughout the day.
