Depressing News of the Week- Rupert Murdoch buys National Geographic

Yes, you heard that right- Climate Changer denier extraoridinaire and long the purveyor of Faux News (conservative propaganda) through countless media formats has purchased a 73% share of National Geographic- the oldest and most instantly recognizable science based magazine in the world.

I’ll admit- I need to do some more research (the coverage of this has been lacking) to see what exactly this means in terms of whether the non-profit Nat Geo foundation is now a for profit, and what, if anything this will mean for the millions in grants doled out to scientists by the Nat Geo Foundation.

Regardless- I am figuring out how to cancel my subscription this weekend.

This should be major news IMHO- as this is potentially giving one very wealthy and conservative (and anti-science) man control over THE major source of exposure to scientific issues- especially of children, in our nation.

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

This gave me pause as well given their history of controlling messages.

One only needs to look at the Wall Street Journal to see the extensive damage that will be done by Murdoch ownership. Once a staid old lady of objective business reporting, the Journal is now little more than a right wing rag of the Fox empire. Sad to see the Geographic going the same route.

Not that this is directly related, but Rick Santorum was on Bill Maher two weeks ago and got in an argument over climate change. Rick noted that only 56% of scientists support the claim of climate change being man-influenced versus the 97% number. Politifacts called BS on Santorum and noted he got his information from a blogger who did his own unverified analysis. The week before Maher had as a guest, Dr. Michael Mann, the head of the Earth Science dept. at Penn State. When asked about consensus, Mann said “every major science organization believes climate change is real and man-influenced.” I am sure that comment may not find it the Murdock National Geographic.
