Fear… “them”

When this election cycle we were hearing constantly abiut “them” – them being the Hispanics/Latinos. Bringing disease. Stealing Jobs. Burdening our government services. Being murderers, rapists, and drug dealers. And how we must round them all up. Deport or jail them. Build a giant wall (and make Mexico pay for it). And of course- the implication that this “simple” step would go a long way towards “making America great again”.

And of course, we’ve also heard the same about another “them”. The Muslims. Who me bar from entering the country. Whose Mosques we must infiltrate and surveil. Whose neighborhoods must be patrolled.

And we’ve also heard undercurrents about a whole host of “thems”… socialists, liberals, LGBT’s, “thugs”, the list goes on.

And as we see the 3 leading GOP nominees exhibit extremely authoritarian tendencies, I can’t help but think of the famous piece by Martin Niemoller – “First they Came… ”  :

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

About drugsandotherthings

I am a criminal. Because I have used cannabis and psychedelics extensively. I have tried many other drugs, but never cared for the uppers, downers, or dissociatives. I love craft beer, and absinthe, but don't care much for alcohols effects- which quite frankly, are boring and dangerous. Science is my religion. I am in my 40's, and have travelled extensively. And often forced myself outside of my confort zone. I am employed, a respected member of my communtiy, an animal lover, an environmentalist, a political junkie, and the realities I have experienced continue to push me further to the left of the political spectrum.

1 Response to Fear… “them”

  1. Keith says:

It is interesting to me that people believe anything Donald Trump says or even Ted Cruz. Yet, they are not too far off center from what the GOP leaders are espousing. They are just more flagrant. I do not want to take away the right for the crowds they are lathering up to be angry, but they need to listen to what is being said and not said and look at these candidates’ history. Their history will tell you their lack of veracity as candidates.

What these angry folks fail to realize is they have been voting against their economic interests for some time now. They should be angry at the GOP leadership, but the answer is not a more extreme GOP person. More jobs have been created under a Democratic White House than under a GOP White House, with a more than 2 to 1 differential on average, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And, although Trump said God will make him the best jobs president, the best one by far, is married to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton – 22 million jobs, which is more than FDR and 6 million more than the GOP best, Ronald Reagan.

We have failed to expand Medicaid in 19 GOP led states that would help the economy in those rural areas. Many of these same states have not increased the minimum wage to a living wage, which is being done in other states. And, renewable energy and asset based community development would create jobs in those areas, as well.

Speaker John Boehner said last January that jobs was his number one mission and he proceeded to not offer one jobs bill. It was not until the Highway Trust Fund bill was passed (which was three years over due), that a meaningful jobs could be counted, but Boehner had left.

I am an Independent voter, but one of the things I detest is people just making stuff up to feed an angry crowd. That is not governance, in my view. Sorry for the rant.
